Smørrebrød

Smørrebrød list

Good places for smørrebrød in Copenhagen, recommended by local chefs, sommeliers and bartenders

Møntergade

Møntergade

"Møntergade is like being home, even though it’s nothing like my parents’ place. The service and awareness, plus the great lunch and dinner menu are the perfect home feeling for me. A small tip is to order a glass of sherry for your smørrebrød at lunch. If the fried herring with morels à la Crème and fried egg are on the menu, it’s a must."

Schønnemann

Schønnemann

"If you are going for Smørrebrød I believe you have to go old school, and Schønnemann is just simply the Headmaster of the old school. My go-to order is egg and shrimp, curried herring, and chicken salad."

Selma

Selma

"Magnus and the team at Selma are so wholesome in perfecting the best smørrebrød in my opinion. On top of the magic in the kitchen created by Magnus and Konstantin, the service is the one that impresses me the most! Always feeling at home. Big love!"

Tivolihallen

Tivolihallen

"Restaurant Tivolihallen is a classic spot for me. When it comes to real, old-school smørrebrød in Copenhagen, this is it. The boss lady Helle is always chatting, pouring snaps, and laughing with the guests. My brother, father, and I go there every Christmas for the traditional Christmas lunch. It’s difficult to highlight one, but I always end up having their juicy meatballs with lamb and spinach stewing. In the summertime, I love to sit in their beautiful backyard drinking beers and eating hand-pilled shrimps on toast."

Told & Snaps

Told & Snaps

"Best smørrebrød out there in my opinion. And I just really enjoy being waited by grown-ass men/women with opinions."

Restaurant Sankt Annæ

Restaurant Sankt Annæ

"An old-school way of service, with the perfect classic interior. Get the herring with curry salad (which is not a salad, but a mayonnaise dress) and a soft boiled egg."

Restaurant Kanalen

Restaurant Kanalen

"Located right next to the canals at Christianshavn. Perfect place to take your grandparents, parents, in-laws, business partners (you get it). High quality food and wine combined with a casual atmosphere. Would eat fish, veggies and drink white wine."

Cafe Rabes Have

Cafe Rabes Have

"This is a hidden gem of a smørrebrød restaurant in Christianshavn. No website or SoMe, just a phone number to book or just walk by like all the regulars in the neighborhood. Run by the sweetest couple for 17 years, this is where my family always eats lunch. I always get the plaice with remoulade, just like when I came here as a kid. And maybe the smoked eel with scrambled eggs!"

Husmanns Vinstue

Husmanns Vinstue

"Well, smørrebrød is something I crave all the time when I am away from Copenhagen (but TBH, also when I am there...). There is just something about the traditional flavor combinations and toppings you should not mess with. Husmanns is old-school and traditional, the friendliest service and I am always amazed how the waiters can pour up my schnapsglas without even looking: right up to the edge, no space left unused."

Restaurant Kronborg

Restaurant Kronborg

"Restaurant Kronborg is my favorite place for smørrebrød. I think a lot of the classic smørrebrød places are pretty similar but I really like the people running Kronborg and the food is great. I am a big herring boy but their warm dishes are super good too. It's always my family’s first request when they visit from Texas. Always order a “fornuftig” O.P. Anderson (or several) and make sure to write off the rest of your afternoon."
